We all know that working for yourself requires a lot of hard work, endless hours, and determination. It’s not an easy road to get started on, and maintaining your business requires just as much attention. But, being self-employed comes with so many AMAZING benefits that I think are worth celebrating! We’ve gotta acknowledge the small wins just as much as the big ones around here because entrepreneur life isn’t for the faint of heart. Let’s get into our everyday wins, shall we?
We all have those blah days where we don’t feel like getting anything done, and trudging through the work day feels endless. Here’s the good news about being self-employed – if you have a few hours or a day where you don’t feel like working, you don’t have to! On the flip side, sometimes as entrepreneurs we get inspired at times outside of the typical work day and feel the need to make some progress. When you work for yourself, you can get *ish* done anytime you want. Have an amazing idea at 10pm on a Saturday? Grab your laptop and get your ideas down! You can work whenever the mood strikes, and let yourself relax when you’re not into it.
Travel is something that makes life FUN. Having the ability to expand your horizons and see new parts of the world is exciting and something everyone should try. With a regular ol’ 9-5, you don’t have the ability to travel regularly because you’ve got to make sure your trips fit into your given vacation days and it requires a lot of planning. You don’t get to continue on working from anywhere in the world, and you’re very limited. As a business owner, you can travel WHENEVER and WHEREVER you want! There’s no vacation days to take because you get to decide your schedule. And here’s a bonus win – if your business is solely run online, you can work even across the world. All you need is a laptop and decent internet connection. Get your bags packed and get ready to set off on your next big adventure!
If you’re having a day where you feel like working in your PJs, guess what? You can! Working from home as a business owner means that you can show up however you want. If that means wearing your flannel Christmas PJs in August, you go right ahead. No one can tell you how to dress or what to do when you’re the boss, so I think we can count that as a check in the pro column.
As far as self-employment perks go, this is one of the biggest. When you’re in charge of your work, you’re able to prioritize other things when needed. And so often there comes an occasion when your family or friends need your attention. Your sister is getting married? Take the week off and help her prepare! You’re having a baby? Plan out your maternity leave without feeling pressured or rushed. Family emergency? Literally drop what you’re doing and get wherever you need to go. Family comes first and whether the reason is a big one or just something you want to attend for funsies, you can do it no questions asked.
This is the absolute BIGGEST reason that encompasses all of the other kick ass reasons to work for yourself. You can give yourself a life with freedom! When you work for a company or for someone else, you are given some liberties, but let’s be honest, not many. And not nearly enough. Life is about enjoying your days and having experiences that enrich your time, and when you are self-employed, you can create any life you want.
Now I want to hear from you! What are some of your favorite reasons to work for yourself?
